The 12-Point Electrical Safety Checklist for Family Homes

A practical checklist to prevent tripping, overheating, and unsafe wiring conditions in daily use.

Electrical safety in homes is mostly about prevention. Start by checking switchboards for burn marks, loose sockets, and any crackling sounds when appliances are switched on.

Avoid overloading extension boards, especially with high-power devices like heaters, irons, and microwaves. Use dedicated points for heavy loads and replace damaged cords immediately.

Test RCD/ELCB protection periodically and make sure earthing is verified during maintenance. If your lights flicker during appliance startup, ask for a load and distribution check.

Keep wet areas strictly isolated from temporary electrical connections. In bathrooms and balconies, only weather-safe fittings should be used.

A quarterly inspection by a qualified technician helps catch overheating points, weak terminations, and insulation risk before they become dangerous failures.
